Marine Parks

Marine parks help to conserve marine biodiversity within the NSW marine estate, while at the same time providing for many other activities, such as diving, boating, fishing and tourism.

Marine parks provide a platform to showcase our distinctive sealife and iconic natural features. Marine parks also provide opportunities for scientists, students and educators to improve our understanding of the marine environment.

Marine parks include a variety of habitats stretching from the estuaries, beaches and headlands of our coastline and further out to sea.

Marine parks are also declared at national and international levels in Australian and global systems of marine protected areas.

Marine parks in NSW

There are six marine parks in NSW. In NSW marine parks are declared under the Marine Estate Management Act 2014 and managed by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.

The Mainland Marine Park Network Management Plan is available to view online.

You can download a copy of the Network Management Plan (PDF, 10267.93 KB) and further information is available on the Marine park management planning webpage.

Each of the six marine parks has an advisory committee. These committees provide a voice for local communities to contribute to the management of the state's marine estate and the local marine park. They engage with local residents and stakeholders, provide a forum for local communities to raise issue and give valuable feedback to the government.
